Six Months of Building Research Without Borders. ARIVE has completed its first six months of implementation. This first period was mainly about building the foundations of the project: bringing partners together, agreeing on how the consortium will work, preparing the Virtual Research Semester model, launching public communication channels, and setting the basis for future participant engagement.
Launched in February 2026, ARIVE - Advancing Research and Innovation in Higher Education through Virtual Exchanges, brings together institutions from Latvia, Georgia, Ukraine, Portugal and Norway. The project aims to create new opportunities for students, doctoral candidates, early-career researchers, supervisors and higher education institutions to engage in research learning across borders through virtual exchange.
During February-July 2026, ARIVE moved from project launch to practical preparation. All deliverables and milestones planned for the first six months were completed.
From Kick-off to a Working Consortium. The first months were dedicated to establishing a shared understanding of the project and a clear way of working. The consortium discussed project objectives, work packages, responsibilities, communication practices and implementation timelines.
This work was formalised through the Project Management and Coordination Plan, which defines how partners cooperate, how decisions are made, how reporting is organised and how progress is followed. The Risk Management and Contingency Plan was also completed, helping the consortium identify possible challenges early and prepare appropriate responses.
These steps are important because ARIVE is implemented across several countries and institutions. Clear coordination from the beginning helps ensure that partners work as one consortium with a shared direction.
Preparing the ARIVE Learning Model. A major focus of the first six months was preparation of the Virtual Research Semester (VRS), the core educational model of ARIVE.
The VRS is designed as a structured virtual research learning experience. Participants will not only attend online sessions; they will work in interdisciplinary teams, explore research questions, discuss methods, engage with evidence, receive guidance and prepare research-related outputs.
During this period, the VRS Curriculum was completed. It sets the academic basis for future learning activities and includes key themes such as AI and data science in research, digital research methods, open science and FAIR data management.
The virtual mentorship framework was also finalised. This will support structured interaction between learners, supervisors and mentors, ensuring that participants receive academic guidance, feedback and support during their research learning journey.
Preparing to Reach Participants. ARIVE aims to engage and train 2,500 participants during the project. To support this ambition, the Operational Plan for Trainee Generation and Delivery was completed.
This plan defines how future participants will be reached, recruited, supported and monitored. It combines institutional mobilisation, curriculum integration, digital outreach, stakeholder engagement and partner networks.
The plan recognises that ARIVE will involve different groups: students, doctoral candidates, early-career researchers, supervisors and mentors. Each group has a specific role in building the ARIVE research learning community.
Becoming Visible. During the first six months, ARIVE also launched its public presence. The project website and social media platforms are now available and will serve as the main channels for sharing news, activities, resources and participation opportunities.
The Dissemination and Communication Plan was completed to guide how ARIVE communicates with students, researchers, academic staff, institutions, policymakers and the wider public.
The website already presents the project concept, consortium, activities, Virtual Research Semesters, mentorship, training resources and news. It will continue to grow as ARIVE moves into the next stages of implementation.
What Comes Next. The next phase will focus on moving from preparation toward implementation. ARIVE will continue developing the virtual learning ecosystem, preparing future Virtual Research Semester activities, strengthening mentorship processes, sharing training resources and expanding communication with potential participants.
The first six months created the foundation. The coming period will bring ARIVE closer to its main goal: making research education more accessible, collaborative and connected across borders.
